Radiation environment

The radiation is one of the main issues which can affect operation of the monitor. A lot of sensitive electronic elements are placed in the surface buildings (SPS - BA5) or in underground galleries well shielded from machine tunnel (LHC). Nevertheless some sensitive ports must stay in the tunnel. These are:

  • camera, which is radiation-hardened and shall withstand dose of 10 kGy,
  • camera control electronics, which is placed in a shielding, upstream the BGI.

In order to assess level of radiation in the vicinity of the cameras, RPL (radio-photo luminescent) dosimeters were installed next to them (photo). The results obtained during Run I are:

location dose [Gy]
SPS H camera 9.5
LHC camera which failed (which one? beam2, 2012.07.27) 46.9

It is worth noticing that the dosimeters helped to spot a radiation-sensitive electronic circuit in otherwise radiation-hard cameras and correct camera construction by moving the circuit to another location (see Equipment/Cameras).
